A celebration of seaside nostalgia and contemporary coastal ease, the reimagined Nielsen Kiosk sits proudly within a 1914 heritage pavilion, its interiors gently transformed into a sun-soaked, all-day venue for Sydney’s eastern shoreline. Formerly divided between a takeaway café and a sit-down restaurant, the brief called for unity—a single offering that would welcome all, from sandy-footed swimmers to those settling in for cocktails by the sea.
The design dances between old and new. A floor of checkerboard mosaic in sorbet tones sets the tone—playful and familiar—while softly curved microcement counters are edged in lemon-glazed bricks that add a joyful punctuation to the space. Above, buttery panelled walls and floral-patterned lampshades frame the interior with softness and light.
Details delight at every turn: hand-painted timber cabinetry, a unique marble benchtop, and a palette of salty blue tiles behind the bar lend depth and tactility. Original stained glass windows scatter morning light across tabletops, while casual low-slung banquettes, retro-inspired mesh stools, and breezy rattan seats nod to long afternoons and relaxed hospitality.
This is a space where history is honoured but never frozen—elevated through texture, tone, and a dash of whimsy. The Nielsen Kiosk now lives as it always should have: open-hearted, sun-drenched, and made for moments both everyday and unforgettable.
